Hi.

The peace talks might have been derailed, but there can be peace in Sudan if an arms embargo is implemented

The SAF has not shown up to the peace talks the US has organized in Geneva. While the SAF have valid reasons for not showing up, they should have put those aside because there needs to be an end to the genocide and an end to the famine the war is causing. While it is seemingly a positive step that the RSF has made it to the peace talks, they did not attend meetings between Sudanese women and activists discussing gender based violence and how to protect women against GBV. The RSF is the main perpetrator of GBV in Sudan.

Since the SAF is refusing to attend the peace negotiations, what the US needs to do instead is to discuss with the international community, an arms embargo that will end the genocide and starvation of millions of innocent Sudanese.

~150,000 Sudanese have died since the war broke.

25 million Sudanese face starvation.

10 million Sudanese have been displaced.

Sudanese children are dying from starvation.

Aid is not making its way to the areas in need because both the RSF and SAF are blocking entry or looting the supplies. This should be another major issue that the US and international community addresses in the peace talks. What are the repercussions for both warring parties for withholding humanitarian aid from starving Sudanese and for stealing the aid that is critically needed? Those repercussions should include extensive sanctions to all involved if humanitarian aid is not permitted to pass or impeded. For too long, countries have not targeted the main military officials and individuals supplying arms to these militaries. If the US congress declares there is a genocide occurring in Sudan, there should be a strong response from the US to end the genocide. Other countries also need to aggressively sanction the war criminals that are committing this genocide and forced starvation in Sudan. A handful of sanctions has not worked, there needs to be more to put an end to these atrocities.

Why hasn’t there been an arms embargo implemented yet? What else does the international community need for weapons to be cut off? Why are there not demands for an arms embargo against the SAF and RSF? Where are these discussions? Why won’t governments do the right things and disarm both sides?

There are few hospitals open and the few that are open are under threat. Where are the repercussions from world leaders not just to condemn these attacks but hold those who attack hospitals responsible? Where is the support for international law?

We need a global response now. Millions of lives are at stake.

Speak up for Sudan.

This article must be highlighted because it was both informative and deeply moving. I was brought to tears. It not only covers what is taking place in Sudan and the history of the warring parties, but also the issues that Sudan has faced for decades. This is a must read and must share.
