Children are dying in Haiti. Pregnant people are dying from lack of healthcare. The armed militias in Haiti are trying to gain control of a city near the border of the Dominican Republic so that they can have access to arms and take greater control of Haiti.
The Kenyan police force is not deterring the Haitian militias. There are reports that the multinational security support (MSS) had to be rescued by Haitian police when confronted by militia members. It is worrying whether the MSS could potentially harm innocent Haitians because they have immunity.
It seems like there is not much progress in Haiti. What is needed is humanitarian aid and protecting civilians from violence, but neither is occurring.
Let’s take a look at several pieces that are covering the current situation in Haiti.
The Soufan Center: Recurrent Gang Violence Proving a Difficult Cycle to Break in Haiti
This is a must read and must share piece. What most people don’t understand because it is underreported, is that Haiti’s conditions are extremely horrible throughout Haiti and the violence is spreading. The militias are comprised mostly of children that either have been forced into these forces or have no other option to survive. I agree that it will take many years for these children soldiers to be able to process the violence they have been forced into. Half of the militias are made up of children.
UNFPA: Mothers and daughters of Haiti, living in the grip of violence
This is another must share, multimedia piece that includes video testimonies from Haitian women and girls and their personal experiences. Please watch and read what is happening in Haiti. Haiti has the highest mortality rate for pregnant women in the western hemisphere. There are approximately 84,000 pregnant people in Haiti that have little to no access to healthcare.
Miami Herald: Haiti declines Dominican Republic inauguration invite
Tensions are still running high between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Haitian officials are refusing to attend the inauguration of the president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader. A lot of this boycott is due to the Dominican government not permitting Haiti to fly any planes at all over Haiti or between their airspace. There are also issues with Haitians seeking safety in the Dominican Republic and either denied entry or deported back to Haiti even when there are few safe places or access to food and water.
Haiti needs your support and your voice.
Haiti needs humanitarian aid.
Haiti needs a strong government that is rooted in supporting Haitians to expel the militias and their influence.
May the whole world be free.
