The first step in restoring stability to Haiti has been made and the transitional council has been sworn into office. The nine council members have chosen Michel Boisvert as the interim Prime Minister. Unfortunately they were not able to do have the official ceremony in the National Palace because the gangs that maintain control of the building.
Now that Haiti has someone to steer the ship, a lot must be accomplished. They have a monumental task ahead. How will they achieve peace?
This is where aid organizations and world leaders should step up to assist Haiti’s transitionary council in administering aid and restoring peace. The more organizations and countries that offer help and show up, the more stability that can be achieved. Violence reigns when needs are met, and if this council can address the pressing needs of Haitians, then violence will die down.
Should council leaders meet with gang leaders? Do the gangs have grievances or is this a case of a power vacuum and people taking advantage of the absence of a legitimate leader? Will a legitimate leader be the solution? Will it take force to stop the gang violence?
Hopefully, with the transitional council and the appointments of other officials now that the council has been chosen, they can implement strategies to get aid safely into Port-au-Prince. Once food, water, and medicine is accessible again, the gangs will lose their control because people won’t be desperate for resources.
Haiti needs the world support. 2500 innocent Haitian have died this year due to violence. Haiti needs peace.
Many Haitians are concerned about the new government and if things will get better or if this is just another show. Again, it is imperative that humanitarian organizations and world leaders step up to help this transitionary council address the needs of Haitians so they there is actual progress being made.
If the violence does not abate quickly, the temporary council will lose the little bit of hope that Haitians are clinging to. There’s already concern about the appointed members because some of them have been in government and Haitians are looking for a change, not the same people who have created the circumstances for violence to erupt.
Police forces from other countries may be sent to Haiti from Kenya. The issue with foreign police intervention is that it may escalate gang attacks and fuel further unrest.
May the whole world be free.
