Whether it be a pregnant person’s right to abortion or laws holding perpetrators of violence against women accountable, it is glaringly apparent that the US does not care to protect women. The Supreme Court began hearing the arguments regarding Idaho’s abortion law. A rich and connected man who is a known rapist as the number of victims is extensive, has had his conviction overturned.
The one thing I will give the Democrats is that they are at least challenging Idaho’s deadly abortion ban. However, when the Democrats had the chance to codify abortion, they never did. The federal government could withhold funding to states that have abortion bans, so they have chosen to go to court. Understandably, the federal government does not want to penalize other people who would be detrimentally affected if these states did not have federal funding for aspects within healthcare or otherwise. The other side of the that coin is that sometimes pressure has to be put on these states because there are pregnant people’s lives that are forever changed and damaged due to these abortion bans.
What is extremely alarming is that the justices in the Supreme Court are supportive of Idaho’s refusal to give pregnant people lifesaving emergency care. If a pregnant person requires an abortion in order to live, Idaho would rather that pregnant person dies. This is in conflict with the EMTALA, a federal law that requires hospitals provide care to all patients.
There are several justices that want to erase women’s rights and pregnant people’s rights. We have lawmakers that want to erase women’s rights and pregnant people’s rights. Where are the protections when pregnant people are most vulnerable? Why do lawmakers and the judicial system see pregnant people as nothing more than a disposable vessel?
Well, look at the laws that are nonexistent to protect women against violence and femicide. There is no protection against stalkers. There is no protection against violence. There is no protection against sexual assault. There is no protection against death. Men commit these heinous crimes against women and walk free.
Legislators and the judicial system are trying to ensure that women remain vulnerable and oppressed. Men in power want women to lose all aspects of safety, ability to make choices, and essential human rights.
Victims of Harvey Weinstein have gone through the painful process of trials and to have his conviction overturned is a slap in the face to justice. It demonstrates how little justice in the US women are afforded, if any. The pain these victims are experiencing is something unimaginable as well as their loss of safety and faith, which was probably fragile to begin with having gone through a horrifying sexual assault.
Women need allies. Women need your voice. Women need your action.
We need to burn everything down until women and pregnant people can be safe, heard, and protected. This means holding perpetrators of violence against women accountable. This means creating laws that will protect a pregnant person’s right to choice. This means laws that do not benefit perpetrators of violence against women.
The US is not a safe place for women. If anyone is making that claim, they are lying to themselves.
There is hope. There are initiatives in some of the states with abortion bans meant to overturn those bans and protect a pregnant person’s right to choice, but every single state with laws attacking abortion need to be overturned not just in Arizona and Florida.
We still need to address the justice system as well. Women need laws that actually protect victims. States are looking at eliminating access to birth control and no-fault divorce. These are not meant to protect women but to protect abusive men.
Please protect women and speak up for women’s rights because they are being eliminated at such a rapid pace that women will soon lose all ability to be safe and in some states, that is already the case unfortunately.
What will happen if the Supreme Court rules that states do not have to provide emergency care to pregnant people? What will happen if Trump is elected and he bans abortion? What will happen if Biden is elected and does nothing to protect a pregnant person’s right to an abortion? Who in elected office is fighting to protect women’s rights and not eliminate them?
