Small steps toward progress are being made in Haiti. Medicine has finally been delivered to Haiti for the first time in months. The US Congress is looking into weapon trafficking into Haiti to hopefully cut off Haitian militias access to weapons and end the violence in Port-au-Prince. However, peace has not been achieved until all ports are functioning, aid shipments are able to distribute supplies unimpeded, and Haitians can live without the constant threat of fear.
Over 1.6 million Haitians are food insecure.
360,000 Haitians have been forcibly displaced.
Children are being forced to join militias.
The violence must end in Haiti.
What can be done? World leaders need to ensure that there are no illegal weapons shipments to Haiti. They also need to offer funding to food programs and aid programs which are underfunded right now.
What will happen when the peacekeeping forces arrive in Haiti? Some of these militias include children that had no choice to join. Will these children be slaughtered?
There are more aid shipments planned so assistance is beginning to trickle in. That is a bit of relief to the millions who lack access to food or medicine. A steady flow and distribution process is necessary for Haitians to regain stability.
