Haiti is not a priority for the world and the fact that it is being forgotten is deplorable. It is difficult to find electricity, food, or medicine. Haiti is surrounded by countries that could help to facilitate humanitarian assistance to Haitians, but countries are choosing to build walls or refuse entry to Haitian asylum seekers. We all need to share the stories from Haiti to bring awareness to this worsening crisis.
CNN: With Haiti cut off from the world, supplies are dwindling and its crisis is getting worse
This is a must read article and well-documented photographs of the current conditions within Haiti. The suffering is significant and should not be occurring. The Haitian transitionary council, world leaders, and humanitarian organizations must unite and create a cohesive plan to receive and distribute aid across Haiti. Children are extremely malnourished and some abandoned. Families are forced to locate and purchase bandages for their injured family member in order to receive treatment.
Reuters: Kenyan lawyers move to block police deployment to Haiti
Kenya was to send 1,000 police officers to Haiti but the Kenyan court has ruled that there should be a reciprocal agreement involved for the officers to be deployed to Haiti. Should these officers be sent at all? Is there a way that Haitian’s can gain control without further violence? The conditions in Port-au-Prince are horrible and sending in 1,000 officers could add more fuel to the fire. It all depends on what Haitians want for their country and so far no one is asking Haitians if they want the Kenyan police force present or not. No articles include the perspective of Haitians, and the world needs to know what they want and what they think is an appropriate manner to handle the militias that have taken control. This article does refer to Haitians hesitancy over allowing foreign police due to the repercussions from similar missions in the past that caused outbreaks of disease and also sexual violence from those sent to protect Haitians.
Al Jazeera: UN urges US to stop forced returns to Haiti after latest deportation flight
UNHCR has released a statement asking the US government to cease all deportations to Haiti because these Haitian refugees could die if they are sent back. The fact that the US is not allowing Haitian asylum seekers to remain in the US is amoral and disturbing coming from a supposed “liberal” president. These actions further proves Biden’s stance politically, which would be that of a conservative because these are the actions of a conservative president to send Haitians back into a war zone.
