The resolution that the US presented to the Security Council never called or demanded for a ceasefire. The US delegation chose to use that phrasing that there is an 'imperative’ need for a ceasefire, while never actually outlining a plan for a ceasefire. All this resolution required was that Hamas releases the hostages, but it never goes so far as to create any path for both parties to follow toward actual sustained peace. One thing that was clear was that if there were to be any ceasefire, Hamas would have to release all hostages which is something the US has not done to this point.
This US resolution is also presented as a permanent ceasefire, but this is nothing more than a six week truce.
Russia, Algeria, and China opposed the resolution. Guyana abstained as well. They all agree that this resolution never called for an actual ceasefire, but was another performative trick from the US government to appear like they are facilitating peace, when in actuality, nothing has been constructively achieved toward any aspect of peace. Russia and Algeria also felt, and the majority of security council members agree, that a ceasefire should not be conditional on the release of hostages because there would be a much larger target on all Palestinians facing Israel’s genocidal retribution.
What is odd and uneven about this resolution is that there were directives for Israel, like allowing more aid into Gaza and refusing Israel’s proposed buffer zones. So if this resolution could outline specific steps that Israel must take, then why didn’t it also outline steps for a ceasefire if this resolution is promoted like it is ensuring a ceasefire?
Every country that voted against the resolution felt that this was a smoke and mirror show from the US and that the US misled everyone into believing that this resolution had substantive plan for a ceasefire when it simply mentioned it and left out how to facilitate peace between Israel and Hamas.
Algeria called out the US for attacking a previous resolution that the US vetoed which would have saved thousands of lives at this point. Now all the US offers is the mention of a ceasefire with no clear plan.
All of those opposed and abstained also said that there is no mention of Israel’s war crimes.
This US resolution was another attempt at their performative optics when the Biden administration is under pressure from the majority of Americans who want a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and for the US government to cease all arms transfers to Israel. So the White House does what it heavily relies on, twisting the truth so that they appear like they care while never taking any actionable steps. This resolution was all for appearances and made to seem like it was going to achieve something but lacked any accountability for Israel’s war crimes or an outline for peace. It mentions a ceasefire, but it is left purposefully ambiguous, which was the intent of the US so that no peace would actually be achieved.
On top of the Biden administration’s regular performative show, they are pumping out more and more stories in major news outlets that Biden and Netanyahu are fighting. It’s either that or that Netanyahu is going rogue and refusing to listen to Biden. Neither of these narratives are true. Look at the actions that are still underway between Israel and the US like the arms and munitions sales that are taking place currently. The yearly 3.8 billion in military spending also was just approved in the budget, which could have been adjusted if any of this were true. This is a false narrative to keep up the pretense that Biden and Netanyahu are at odds when they are not. When the US sanctions and embargoes Israel, then we know that they are truly quarreling. The US resolution is more proof on just how the US supports Israel and their actions when they did not condemn or even acknowledge any war crimes committed by Israel and did nothing to push for peace so that Israel could continue their genocide.
Of course the US spun it that the members who vetoed the US resolution were playing a political game and being spiteful with their veto. However, the US ignored the criticisms from the members that vetoed and opposed the resolution. The US did not address the lack of directives toward a ceasefire and their intentional use of ambiguous language to avoid one.
The world is catching onto Biden’s lies. More people are pointing out his hypocrisy in his words and his actions which do not align.
From the river to the sea, may Palestine be free. May the whole world be free.
