Not to diminish the positive direction the UN has taken, the resolution passed in the UN is a truce and not a lasting ceasefire. It’s not disingenuous to state that it is a ceasefire when this resolution only covers a two week timeframe. Despite this being a short duration, this truce is necessary because any length of peace is better than the atrocities that Palestinians are subjected to. Aid will be able to enter Gaza during this truce, which will hopefully be enough to stop the Israeli government’s intentional starvation of millions of Palestinians.
The US abstained from voting on the temporary ceasefire resolution. Why? Because it doesn’t achieve anything lasting so instead of vetoing another resolution, the US could give the perception like they care about human rights and international law. It should be noted that the US called this resolution non-binding to give Israel an opening to ignore the temporary ceasefire. It is binding because it is passed in the UN Security Council. This statement from the US demonstrates how little respect the US has for the UN or international law.
Israel will ignore this resolution like they have all of the resolutions passed that have held Israel accountable. There have been resolutions that are legally binding, and Israel has never faced any consequences for blatantly flouting international law. Lebanon has brought this up for decades and never has found justice for what Israel has done to Lebanon. Israel has a history of disregarding the UN resolutions, but no country has stood up to Israel’s lawlessness.
Many people are applauding the US for refraining from another veto, but how can anyone congratulate the US when they just told Israel to ignore the resolution when the US called it non-binding? Why would anyone congratulate the US government when they are not doing anything to progress a peace deal but are ensuring that Israel’s genocide persists through military funding and arms shipments?
Another odd narrative floating about the US abstention being proof of the disagreement between the US and Israel over the ongoing war. There is no shift with the US and Israel. Israeli officials canceling a visit to the US is all for show. The checks are still being cashed in Israel. The guns and bombs are still making their way to the IDF. This rift narrative is nothing but a bad performance to deflect from the truth that there is no disagreement between Israel and the US.
The only way there would be a massive shift and division between the US and Israel is when the military funding and arms transfers cease. This has not occurred which means that relations between Israel and the US are unaltered. Biden has voters breathing down his neck and he wants the world to perceive that he is handling Netanyahu differently, but he is not.
So there is an immediate ceasefire that just passed but has Israel stopped bombing Gaza? No, in fact Israel is increasing their bombardments on Gaza after the UNSC resolution was passed.
When Israel keeps bombing Gaza, what will happen in response to their flagrant disregard to the UN resolution? If Israel does not stop their attacks on Gaza, what repercussions does Israel face?
Will countries finally sanction and embargo Israel and the countries that supply arms to Israel?
World leaders are still not doing anything concrete to protect the lives of Palestinians and human rights. They are dangerous to have in power.
Whether it be the US who refuses to cut off funneling arms and munitions to Israel or world leaders who refuse to sanction and embargo Israel and their arms suppliers, they are all dangerous to have in power.
Gaza needs a lasting ceasefire. Gaza needs world leaders to hold Israel accountable. Do not stop demanding for peace and accountability.
