This week alone, the UN Security Council has agreed upon a ceasefire resolution for Gaza and an order for all warring parties to stop attacks on the city of El Fasher, but it is very apparent that no one is respecting any resolutions from the UN.
Russia was met with a barrage of sanctions when they refused to observe the calls for ceasefires over their war on Ukraine and the war crimes that have been committed there, but the same cannot be said for the wars in Gaza or Sudan. Even yesterday, the US expanded sanctions against Russia but they are not being equivalent with their sanctions toward those who are overtly committing war crimes as they are with Russia, and neither are the majority of countries. Does the UN carry any meaningful weight?
If the UN does nothing to hold war criminals accountable, such as removing membership to members that have been charged with war crimes, and countries do not take action to uphold international law and human rights, what is the point of investing in a failing institution that holds different countries to different standards and lacks any authority to hold parties accountable? The entire Security Council is a disaster because the permanent members have far too much sway and this creates a horrible imbalance of power. That coupled with the fact that no country has any repercussions for committing crimes against humanity, shows how ineffective and corrupted the international organization is and why things must change in the UN. Either things change in the UN or it’s time the UN ends and a new global organization that has an equal power structure and also carries weight for those who perpetrate war crimes is created. The world needs an international group that addresses issues, crimes, wars, and law between all countries but if the system is beyond repair, it’s time to organize something that addresses those shortfalls.
The member countries are just as much to blame because they are abusing the UN system and its lack of teeth and the length of time to come to a consensus or make change. If countries acted the way they voted in the UN, then the UNSC would not have had to call for a ceasefire in Gaza or Sudan because members would have sanctioned and embargoed those committing war crimes just as they had done with Russia, but this is not occurring and it’s a horrible display of performative tactics from governments who want to appear that they care but take no action which proves that they care.
If countries do nothing to hold war criminals accountable then there is nothing that can be done to end the war because the reality is that world leaders have no issues with either genocide continuing.
What we need to understand is that our elected leaders do not care anything about human rights or international law, they just want to put on a show to seem like they do and that they respect it while behind the scenes they are funding these genocides and shipping arms.
The real question is how long is this sham of a system feasible? When do we call out the fact that we are being quietly oppressed and our rights are slipping through our fingers?
