The UN General Assembly to Vote on a Ceasefire for Gaza, but the Resolution is Non-binding

Israel will not listen or adhere to any resolution. On November 15, almost one month ago, the UN Security Council passed the Malta drafted resolution calling for a four-hour humanitarian pause in Gaza. Israel claimed they would follow the pause, but they have not respected the legally binding resolution from the UN Security Council and the supposed prompting of the US. There has been no repercussion or further discussions of Israel’s disregard a legally binding resolution from the UN Security Council. This has all been forgotten unfortunately. Aid trucks were to enter daily during these four-hour pauses, and now nothing enters into Gaza and people are dying of starvation, medical complications, and diseases because no aid is getting through. Israel has increased their bombardment of Gaza and has ignored any pause mandated by the UN Security Council.

On Friday, the US vetoed the latest resolution in the Security Council for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Now, the General Assembly wants to take action and vote for a ceasefire using UN Resolution 377 as a means to vote for peace.

The votes and speeches are admirable in theory, but the truth is that they yield no result. Gaza needs firm action taken from world leaders and not just symbolic votes and declarations for public consumption.

Only Belgium has been the brave nation to take actionable steps in enacting sanctions on Israel. These are real means that are effective if ALL of these nations voting in the General Assembly also sanctioned Israel. To be truly effective, a complete embargo is needed. Neither Israel or the US will listen or respect the vote from the General Assembly or the Security Council. What Israel and the US respect is economic profits, and affecting their profits will make them change course.

Words are meaningless without action. All of the world leaders voting for a ceasefire should also embargo Israel and the US to hold them accountable. The US employs embargoes and sanctions of other countries to hold them accountable, it is time that these aggressors are also held to the same standard they hold other countries.

Who is brave enough to embargo Israel and the US? So far, no country appears strong enough to embargo and sanction Israel or the US, and that is why this war in Gaza is continuing and the death toll of innocent Palestinians is climbing and the suffering in Gaza is beyond atrocious. Belgium stands alone as the only country to sanction Israel, and for that they deserve immense respect, but more must be done.

There is immense power in world leaders uniting to take action outside of the UN because Israel refutes the resolutions. If these leaders claim they want the war in Gaza to end, they have the means necessary to do so, but they hide behind the ineffective UN and wonder why nothing is done. These leaders know exactly what they need to do, they just do not want to affect their own country’s bottom line.

Contact your elected officials and demand that they embargo Israel and the US. This request is for people who live outside of the US. Please, call or email your elected officials in your country and demand that they embargo Israel and the US until a permanent ceasefire is established.

There are no doubts that the General Assembly will pass the ceasefire resolution today. While it is wonderful in theory, Gaza needs actions to be taken and not ineffective resolutions which is nothing more than performative virtue signaling that these leaders hope will absolve themselves from their actual inaction.

EMBARGO ISRAEL. EMBARGO THE US.

World leaders have the power, they are hiding behind the UN so they don’t have to actually use their power. The people need to remind them that they are all complicit if they are still trading with Israel and the US.

EMBARGO ISRAEL. EMBARGO THE US.

From the river to the sea, may Palestine be free. May the whole world be free.

Protest. BE UNGOVERNABLE. Demand an embargo. Vote 3rd party. Volunteer. Organize. Boycott. Contact your elected officials. Share the stories from Gaza. Share the news from Gaza. Share the history of Gaza. Please extend the same energy to other countries and people facing genocide and atrocities- Sudan, the Congo, West Papua, the Rohingyans, Armenians, and the Uyghurs.
