Call for Both a UN Resolution for Ceasefire in Gaza and ICC Investigation

Over 7,000 Palestinians have died. What is needed is an immediate ceasefire, access to humanitarian aid, restoring water and electricity, food and medical shipments, and hostage exchanges.

Since the Security Council has been deadlocked over the resolutions for Palestine and Israel, it has been turned over to the General Assembly for a vote. Jordan is presenting a resolution to the General Assembly that include an immediate ceasefire, to lift the evacuation order of northern Gaza, and allow unimpeded humanitarian aid in Gaza. Russia and the US presented resolutions to the Security Council yesterday and both were vetoed. The US and the UK vetoed the Russian resolution which called for Israel to revoke the evacuation order for northern Gaza and to allow immediate access to humanitarian aid. China and Russia vetoed the US resolution that asked for humanitarian pauses, which China felt did not address the root of the issue with Israel at all. Now that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is before the General Assembly, there have been many delegates speaking on the side of human rights and following the respected international humanitarian laws, a path to peace is hopefully beginning.

Reviewing the highlights of the speeches, it appears that many countries are disturbed by the suffering and death that is occurring in Gaza and want a ceasefire and aid for the Palestinians. There is much talk of impunity and the blatant disregard for humanitarian law up to this point, and these speakers are correct in their assessments of the events that have unfolded over the years and what has led to this siege. UN News General Assembly Emergency Meeting on Gaza

It is imperative that the UN adopts a resolution because it is abundantly apparent that the goal of both the US and Israel is to extend the war in the Middle East. Iran warned the US and Israel in their statement to the assembly that if this genocide continues, they will defend their border and view these actions as a threat to the entire area. The Iranian delegate also stated that Hamas wants to negotiate for hostages and would also like to discuss the 6,000 Palestinians held in Israeli captivity.

If a resolution is not adopted and a ceasefire called, there will be a greater war in the Middle East. With the US military sending troops and more warships, the actions of the US are of those of a nation moving posing for war. This military posturing coupled with the lack of aid the US is prescribing are both actions of a nation purposely setting the stage for war. The fact that humanitarian aid organizations have thoroughly described and explained the needs of the Palestinians and they still are not met despite reminders of humanitarian international law, it is allowing not even a sustainable amount of shipments. It seems like the US might be using this as a tool to enter into a greater conflict but attempt to skirt accountability regarding human rights (though this amount of current aid is beyond insufficient for current needs). Israel has one major objective and that is to annex Gaza and in so doing they are committing genocide. If nothing is resolved in the General Assembly, and Israel further kilsl innocent civilians and takes Gaza, the war will bleed into other nations. It is evident that both the US and Israel desire these bloody ends. The General Assembly must take a stand for human rights and uphold international law.

The International Criminal Court also needs nations to call for an investigation and hearing over the human rights violations of Palestinians because the State of Palestine is a member of the ICC. The court has been investigating the conditions in Gaza since 2021 but current ICC members must call for action and urgency. Even in 2021 there was evidence of war crimes. When members spoke out over the violations of rights in Ukraine, actions were taken and the ICC issued an indictment for Putin. Palestine needs both the ICC and UN to stop to the violence and death. Countries Should Back ICC Investigation...

If your country is a member of the ICC, please call your nation’s foreign diplomacy office and urge them to call for an investigation into Israel’s war crimes and genocide committed against the Palestinian people. ICC Directory of Member Countries
