This is the best news for the beginning of 2025. Who knew that the Trump administration would push this through and so quickly? As much as Biden wants to claim this as his victory, it is not. What seems likely to have come down to is the cost of Israel’s genocide, with American taxpayer dollars contributing to billions to fund and arm Israel. Israel is not winning against Hamas, so there is no end in sight. This would all cost trillions more and would continue to fracture economies throughout the world as fewer. It is terribly heartbreaking that this does not come down to human rights and the hundreds of thousands of innocent Palestinian lives that were lost in the genocide Israel has been committing. What it comes down to is money to Trump because money and profit is the only thing that motivates him. A costly “war” that makes no progress and has no end near, along with the possible complete annihilation of all Palestinians as the end result which would undoubtedly be met with worldwide condemnation and retribution, are both possible reasons that would motivate Trump to secure a ceasefire and not continue to support the genocide. There had to be an ending point and Trump recognized that where Biden was clearly fine with committing to killing all Palestinians as the end goal.
It is absolutely shocking that Trump would push this through and without haste. To think he has a better grasp of the war crimes being committed and the repercussions of Israel’s genocide wiping out all Palestinians under his presidency, and yet Biden was perfectly fine with genocide. The fact that Trump ended Israel’s genocide and not Biden encapsulates how far to the right Biden truly lies on the political spectrum. His presidency has proven what a conservative Biden is and how his campaign promises were all lies. What is not shocking is that the Biden administration is trying to switch the narrative up as if they were the ones to achieve this peace deal when it is clear that the Trump envoys were the ones to push for this to end now. It makes no sense for Biden to push for a ceasefire on his final days in office. Why wait this long? Why did the Biden administration send billions more money to Israel just recently if you’re pushing for a ceasefire? There is no logic to what the Democrats are trying to say they achieved when everything they have done has been to undermine any chance of a ceasefire.
Will Israel actually respect this ceasefire? There have been reports of attacks but with the hostages being exchanged, this may hopefully signal the start to peace in Gaza. Palestinians are reporting that there are no airstrikes or the sounds of drones. It is quiet finally.
It is absolutely wonderful to see the joy on the faces of Palestinians that are celebrating. I am elated for them. They deserve all the happiness, peace, and safety on their sovereign land.
My heart is full of joy for Palestine, but I worry. I am cautiously optimistic. Israel regularly breaks ceasefires. They have bombed Lebanon repeatedly with a ceasefire in place. It may be different now that Trump is coming into office. Only time will tell if this peace will last. I hope it does.
Palestinians need humanitarian aid, supplies, and clean water. There is a long road ahead. If aid is held up or if Israel decides to start airstrikes and drone strikes again, everything will backslide and trust will be broken once more. What is extremely concerning is that no countries have sanctioned Israel or placed an arms embargo on Israel. No one country has held Israel to account which means that Israel knows they can get away with genocide with absolutely no repercussions. All leaders around the world are complicit in this genocide because they have the power to have ended it, but they did nothing even though they voted to do so in the UNGA. They are truly disgusting human beings with no regard to human rights, international law, and the lives of innocent Palestinians that were lost. It was done for the optics and nothing more. Elected officials in all governments cannot be trusted and should be out of office facing time in The Hague. Just remember that they do not protect human rights and that includes your human rights.
