The ICJ did not mince words in their ruling against Israel’s unlawful occupation of Palestinian land going back to 1967. The court did not just call out Israel’s annexation of Palestine, but the court also called on the international community to band together and hold Israel accountable for their actions. It doesn’t end there! The ICJ states firmly that Israel does not have sovereignty over their land because it breaks international law and, therefore, should not be recognized as a sovereign state.
From the ICJ ruling today:
Legal Consequences arising from the Policies and Practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.
the State of Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful;
the State of Israel is under an obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory as rapidly as possible;
the State of Israel is under an obligation to cease immediately all new settlement activities, and to evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory;
the State of Israel has the obligation to make reparation for the damage caused to all the natural or legal persons concerned in the Occupied Palestinian Territory;
all States are under an obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by the continued presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory;
international organizations, including the United Nations, are under an obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory; and
the United Nations, and especially the General Assembly, which requested the opinion, and the Security Council, should consider the precise modalities and further action required to bring to an end as rapidly as possible the unlawful presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

World leaders need to uphold this ruling and hold Israel accountable for occupying Palestinian land and breaking international law through their annexation of Palestine and the stifling of Palestinian’s human rights.
This ruling is meaningful and directly points out the injustices and crimes Israel has committed. It will mean more when countries cut all diplomatic ties with Israel, sanction Israel, and create an ironclad arms embargo on Israel.
For once, there is an international institution that has not held back and condemned the human rights abuses, war crimes, and the international laws that have been broken and disregarded by Israel. The ICJ has outlined what should be done by the international community. Now all eyes are upon leaders to see them follow through with the course of action that the ICJ has outlined.
If world leaders and elected officials continue to remain inactive, interact with Israel, do business with Israel, and arm Israel, it is time these officials are voted out of power permanently because they pose a threat to world peace and humanity if they stand with Israel.
This is a glimmer of hope but we need the follow through of those in power. If they choose to disregard the ICJ’s ruling, they are choosing to empower oppression and the nullification of human rights.
From the river to the sea, may Palestine be free. May the whole world be free.
